MY PROMISE
I promise, as Congressman of the Sixth District of Virginia, to pledge half of my salary as Congressman to starting two organizations; one that assists in making Healthcare accessible and more affordable to our forgotten working and middle classes
(FUTURECARE) and one dedicated to small business development
(FUTUREJOBS). Along with strides in education, these are by far the most important initiatives for me, not
merely as a politician, but as a citizen of the United States of America, and
lastly, as a human being.
FUTURECARE: Over the past few
years, my healthcare premium has increased by 50%. I am a
non-smoker, I don't drink, and I am in great health
(knock-on-wood), so I am like so many others in our community -- puzzled at the rising costs of healthcare. It is quite a burden on all Americans, and especially hard on the working and middle class members of our communities. I knew someone who recently injured themselves and needed medical attention. They would not go to the hospital because they
"could not afford the medical bills." This happens all too often.
I envision an entity that assists in facilitating the medical needs our area. For example, we could push for mobile medical units that travel to areas for periodical medical check-ups,
perhaps on weekends so guardians do not have to miss work. Initiated by my funding, with corporate sponsorship, equipment donations, and volunteer hours, this could very well become a reality. This organization could facilitate efforts of Virginia
universities to offer their resources and student/teacher combinations to learn while helping to service the community. There are many ideas. I have the commitment;
now I need your input!
FUTUREJOBS: I am a small business owner. I identify with the problems that face small businesses: never-ending paperwork, tax issues, employees, and expenses that seem to increase regardless of what I do, and that is just for existing businesses. The daunting task of starting a business can be overwhelming. Sourcing goods, bookkeeping, how and who to register your business with, and financing (getting the money!) are all only part of the trying to put your idea to work. Over 90% of all business are small businesses, and we are the backbone of America.
My vision is of an organization that really helps potential entrepreneurs get going, providing services such as assistance with a business plan, market research, finding financing
for start-up, sourcing goods and fixtures, setting up bookkeeping, networking, and finding locations.
The previously mentioned areas of need are just the beginning,
that's why I need your help to
develop this program through constituent feedback. I do not have all of the answers, that is
why I need your input. I want to listen to your community, group, and family about what is important to you. That is why it is so important that you contact me with your ideas.
I am making this pledge and six months from now or six years, it will be my pledge to
you.
